Luke 23:33, “And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him…”
Matthew 27, “They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull).”
John 19:17, “Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).”
“Golgotha, the place of a skull.” It probably took this name from its shape, being a low, rounded hill somewhat in the form of a human skull.
It was just an ordinary place where criminals were executed. But something extraordinary took place there on April 3, AD 33…Jesus of Nazareth died on a cross. (Most researchers believe this is the correct date).
Thanks to Calvary am not the man I used to be.
Thanks to Calvary things are different than before.
And as the tears ran down my face, I tried to tell them
Thanks to Calvary I don't live there anymore.
Humanly speaking, can anyone figure why Jesus went to Calvary? I know of no reason why God would love me! It certainly is not because of anything within me. I don't know why God would lower Himself to come into this world to be born in stinking animal shelter, in a lonely little Judean village, but He did. And there isn't any reason. He just loves me!
Just look at the people God loved: Moses, a murderer; David, murderer and adulterer; Peter, a blaspheming traitor; the woman of Sychar, a prostitute; Mary Magdalene, a fallen woman; The Samaritan woman, unmarried, living with a man who was not her husband; Paul, a religious bigot, who stood by and consented to murder. Sinners just like you and me: liars, deceitful, prideful, prejudiced, wicked, blind, dirty and lost. Jesus says in Matthew 9:13: "I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”
What's the reason people spend themselves for God in unfriendly, dangerous places where they are not welcome? These “fools for Christ” (1 Corinthians 4:10-12) literally pour out their lives on some foreign field, in horrible ghetto's, and remote mission outposts, suffering hatred, bitter opposition and persecution and many even give up their lives to serve God. The answer is always the same, Thanks to Calvary!
David Livingstone poured himself out in Africa; William Carrey, in India; Hudson Taylor, in China; David Wilkerson, facing danger upon danger to bring the gospel to the mean streets of New York City. The five New Guinea Missionaries, Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Flemming, and Roger Youderian were attacked and speared to death. by a group of Huaorani warriors. Why? Thanks to Calvary!
So send I you to labor unrewarded,
To serve unpaid, unsought, unknown.
To bear rebuke, to suffer scorn and scoffing,
So send I you to toil for Me alone.
So send I you to hearts made hard by hatred,
To eyes made blind because they will not see.
To spend, though it be blood, to spend and spare not.
So send I you to taste of Calvary.

Thanks to Calvary! On a Wednesday in October, 1958, Pastor Jim Combs and a layman, Glen Clark came to our home in Downey, California and introduced me to Jesus Christ. God changed my life forever! 2 Corinthians 5:17, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
